Welcome to Long Beach Water Department- Your Reliable Source for Information on LBWD's "Rehabilitation of North Long Beach 9 & 11" and "Under Ocean Floor Seawater Intake & Discharge Demonstration" Project

Welcome to the Long Beach Water Department, your convenient and reliable source for information about Long Beach Water Department's (LBWD's) "Rehabilitation of North Long Beach 9 & 11" and "Under Ocean Floor Seawater Intake & Discharge Demonstration" Projects.

The LBWD is currently redeveloping North Long Beach 9 & 11 wells and installing new pumps and motors. Well redevelopment includes Sonar Jet, wire brushing and bailing, acid treatment, surge block and airlift pumping and pump development. Also included are removal of the existing pump, video logging, spinner logging, well testing, installation of a test pump for redevelopment and well testing and well disinfection.

The LBWD conducted a three-phase Long Beach Desalination Research and Demonstration Project as a project participant in the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's (MWD) Seawater Desalination Program. The three phases are:

Phase 1 - In 2001, the LBWD began the first phase of its Long Beach Desalination Research and Demonstration Project where a bench-scale, 9,000 gallons per day (gpd) two-pass nanofiltration (NF2) seawater desalination unit was developed and constructed. The first phase of this project focused on the preliminary investigation and development of the NF2 process for seawater desalination.

Phase 2 - The LBWD has partnered with the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) in phase two of LBWD's Desalination Project. Phase two is currently underway with the construction of a 300,000 gpd Prototype NF2 Seawater Desalination Plant to perform long-term and full-scale testing of the NF2 desalination process. The project is intended to determine the feasibility of utilizing a system of subsurface intake and discharge for seawater desalination. It also seeks to demonstrate the beach sand filtration can be utilized as the pre-treatment process. The proposed under ocean floor project will be located south of Ocean Boulevard, within and adjacent to Juniperio Beach, immediately south and southwest of Bluff Park in Long Beach.

Phase 3 - It involves the design and construction of a full-scale Seawater Desalination Plant, capable of producing up to 10 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water.

This project website was developed to improve the way the project is completed and delivered to the Long Beach community. By creating a centralized project delivery office, it is possible to move project more quickly and efficiently towards completion. This website serves as a host for the Intake & Discharge Demonstration Project and showcases the LBWD's new approach to project delivery. Information on the project is accessible through an easy-to-use interface. We encourage you to visit the website often for the latest information and project updates.

The SmartMap is a dynamic map of the project.  Enter any address and the interactive SmartMap will display the location of the project relative to the address. We invite you to explore this tool to learn more about the project.
